What is the NIARC? NIARC Teams Event Highlights Key Dates and Milestones Benefits of Joining Start a Team
English | French | German

Overview

April - September 2018

Participating Countries: Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore

Since the competition started in 2011, NI ARC has grown from 10 teams to 20 teams in 2018 from 20 top universities throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Built around the theme “Fast Track to the Future”, the competition required team robots to complete tasks such as going through hazardous terrain, bumps, avoiding obstacles all while optimising performance to maximise efficiency with the objective of earning the most points.

All the teams that completed the competition tasks and made it to the live final also got to keep the development kits NI that supplied.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply kinematic models to design and control a mechanical wheeled robot
  • Apply control system theory to design and implement a control system
  • Select and integrate sensors and actuators into a mechatronic system
  • Implement intelligent robotics algorithms, including image processing and motion
  • Manage a project to deliver a working solution based on the requirements
  • Demonstrate effectively the ability to work in a group with students from various technical backgrounds

What the competition involves

  • Navigation – using certain track features or landmarks within the track, the robot must navigate its way to its destination. Using known coordinates of landmarks, the robot must use localisation techniques to plan the best course to take.
  • Spatial Awareness – the robot must be aware of its surroundings in order to avoid unwanted situations. It must be able to detect, differentiate and avoid or interact with objects.
  • Efficiency – be able to complete the given task in the most efficient way possible.
  • Strategy – employ an effective strategy to gain the most points, based on the robot design. There are multiple considerations to gain points including, speed, task difficulty, bonus tasks etc.
